Virginia María Mercedes Gaudio

I´m an argentine visual artist born in the city of Buenos Aires.
Since I was very young, I discovered that I had manual skills: I developed them with my grandmothers’ guide, who where experts in any kind of artistic and artisan theme. I completed my university studies in Economic Sciences at the University of Buenos Aires and worked many years in that area. As I never liked sports, I dedicated all my free time to read about lots of different subjects and to do everything with my hands: designing my own clothes, sewing and knitting them, embroidering, drawing, painting and even cooking.

In a certain moment, there was a very important change in my life. At a work proposal to my husband, we decided to move to Germany, I left my profession aside and we established ourselves abroad. We settled in Munich, a beautiful place in Europe, where I immersed myself in the technique of painted furniture and of the beautiful murals that characterize the area of Bavaria. By that time the trend of recycling furniture was yet installed, and I was passionate about it.

Back in Buenos Aires I went on working on recycling and painting furniture ( the “upcycling”, which implies adding value to the object through its intervention ). I took classes with artist Inés Estrella, a renowned professor on this subject, and one of my pieces was awarded on a contest. Nevertheless, I decided to change my activity’s focus from applied arts to fine arts, attending courses at the “Asociación Estímulo de Bellas Artes” with professor Carlos Vera and then to professor Maximiliano Rodríguez Marcus visual artists’ atelier, who has been my dear teacher and friend since many years.

In addition to go on developing my work in traditional media, I’m developing a project which I call Ultracycling, that is to say recycling applied on the largest possible scale, combining furniture and objects recycling with my own original artwork .

During this time I took part on some exhibitions and won awards.

Personally I consider my most important contribution is to unveil something very intimate in each of my works, a feelling, something I want to tell, some reaction I intend to provoque.

I also discovered that with an image I can express my longing for people and places which do not more exist, push aside my ghosts, calm fears, rebel against things which are hard to accept. I insist on recurrent themes; I am attracted to get involved in timeless thematic series, as they never end and accompany me throughout my whole life.

Sometimes the start point is a dream, a situation that I live or lived, a story that I read or imagine. Somehow my work illustrates it, in many cases reinvents it or simply turns out the starting point to express something more.

Posibly if you are in front of my work you won’t understand the same, but may be the feeling I’ve put on it can pull some internal thread, bring you some memory, make you reflect.

I invite you to go through my work. If you also like it, it would be nice.
